Ah, finally. This year's RHMB Communal Mix. I spent a few weeks asking for people to give me a favorite track from this year and all of fifteen people were nice enough to participate (thanks, everybody!), including me (thanks, me!)

These are just in the order in which I thought they would sound the best, just so you don't think that Jason and hamdy are my favorites (ironically, I hate them both). I will try and put together a streaming link again before the listening thing.

The RHMB Top Albums of the 1990s List!

Well, here it is! As you might expect Radiohead dominates, but there are a few surprises here, I think. The list gets a little more esoteric as it goes down, but it's sprinkled with mainstream favorites as well as cult classics. Unfortunately, because of the points system, bands with a number of really good albums, but no clear favorite, suffered (like Blur, PJ Harvey, Pavement, and a few others).

Just changing things up a bit here... I want as many boardies as can be "arsed" to do it to give me a top 20 music releases* of the 1990s to me so I can post it! Then I'll aggregate the lists, give your #1 20 points, #2 19 points, etc, add them all together, and see if we have 20 in common with a bunch of votes. I'm hoping for a lot of submissions...

*anything RELEASED in the 1990s (that's any year with a 199*, any kind of release, LP, EP, singles, rerelease, compilation, best of, ANYTHING if it's got a 90s date on it.)

A. It is true that I will be outlining the form of the piece while it is playing, but this is only to keep the listeners engaged. If I'm successful in communicating the form to the audience, the experience might well prove to be more satisfying!


Q. Do I need to know music theory to follow along?

A. No. (if you're able to understand the difference between a verse, a chorus, and a bridge, you're set)


Q. What is the Death and the Maiden?

A. A string quartet piece written by Franz Schubert, its really named String Quartet in D minor, but its popularly known as Death and the Maiden, or Der Tod und das Mädchen. We'll be listening to the second track, II. Andante con Moto, which is based off an earlier Lied (song) that Schubert wrote.

To try to capture James Brown's music and distill it to a single hour of music is not possible. It usually results in as many songs as possible crammed onto a single, one-hour disc. And the 3-minute, for-radio singles at that. For the sake of coverage, they include work from outside his peak (before the early 60s and after the mid 70s) at the expense of the more interesting work during it. It might leave you wondering what the big deal is.

It takes some digging to find the interesting bits: the hyper-kinetic live versions, the two-part versions of the singles. Both of these mediums is where JB did his thang. He gets the band to improvise ("When I say 'uhhhh', I want you to hit me one time! You got me?" on Get It Together), makes fun of his band ("I didn't know you were singing Fred?" on Do It To Death) and proves he was Soul Brother Number 1 (the intro to 'It's A Man's Man's Man's World'). Then there's the artists James Brown produced and those he promoted on his revue (they were naturally signed to one of his record labels).

So the aim of these mixes is to put together some of James Brown's music that you likely won't have heard before. The bits that make him kind of a big deal. There are (fittingly) two mixes - parts one and two - that will each have 2 listening parties at 2200BST and 2200EST on Tuesday June 16th (Part 1) and Tuesday June 23rd (Part 2).
