~~Harri's Old As The Hills 2013 Mix!!

Reality. We must all face it. We're getting older, fatter (or disgustingly thinner), uglier (especially you, ugh! you!) and our taste in music is getting worse. We like things that old people like: light rock, mild jazz, TV theme songs, crap our kids listen to, etc. It is depressing and WRONG, and you should feel shame. But *I* obj still like cool stuff, so here's a 2013 mix of cool people music that I made for you and me to enjoy.:
1. Cheap Time - Spark In the Chain (3:52)
2. Pharmakon - Pitted (5:59)
3. Ben Khan - Eden (2:32)
4. Cate Le Bon - No God (4:36)
5. Psychic Ills - FBI (3:31)
6. Boards Of Canada - Cold Earth (3:42)
7. Broadcast - The Dormitory Window (0:58)
8. The New Lines - The Frog Whisperer (3:16)
9. Thee Oh Sees - No Spell (4:24)
10. Glenn Jones - Across the Tappan Zee (3:26)
11. My Bloody Valentine - If I Am (3:54)
12. Benoît Pioulard - Reliquary (3:02)
13. Bill Callahan - Ride My Arrow (4:58)
14. Yo La Tengo - Stupid Things (5:07)
15. Fuzz - What's In My Head (3:54)
16. Föllakzoid - 99 (9:05)

http://www18.zippyshare.com/v/7620009/file.html

I will try and work on a stream of some kind, but for now let's enjoy the novelty of the ancient non-Spotify "mp3 mix" that I made you.

~~Harri

P.S. head over to VLTF for some healthy, nude, sword-wielding, nostalgia.

Questions.
  1. How well do you know the original Four Seasons? (as in Vivaldi, not hotels or pizza.)
  2. Is Mince Pye Corner Audio the best Christmas pun to begot from this mix?
  3. Is WIXIW the 'the best Radiohead album since Kid A'? read.
  4. Who is your favourite Scandinavian on this list? Clue - there are two countries represented, but whatever, the answer is always 'Jens'.
  5. Have you ever taken Vicodin?
  6. What were you expecting from this mix?
  7. Without cheating, how old do you think Halls is?
  8. The Crystal Castles track would be better if it was called 'Child, Seriously', wouldn't it?
  9. Favourite piece of music (pick ONE only) which Jonathan Richard Guy Awaiting The Coming End Times Greenwood has ever contributed to?
  10. Did you know about this?
  11. Questions for me?

Vielen Dank!

Harri's INEVITABLE Best of 2011-2012 Mix!

Is the blog dead? No, it is just sleeping honey. Don't cry. But seriously, four posts in a year? We should be ashamed. I've been busy with jobs and schools and marathons of poorly-acted pre-CGI science fiction films, so it's not my fault. Maybe the blog needs more oomph? There's no law that says "mix" can't mean "cake mix." We could turn it into a baking blog because THOSE ARE HUGE RIGHT NOW. Or we could turn it into TUMBLR (haha, no). Anyway, I have new material for you:
1. Moon Duo - Sleepwalker (4:52)
2. Here We Go Magic - I Believe In Action (4:39)
3. The Dunes - Jukebox (3:22)
4. John Maus - Head for the Country (3:17)
5. Panda Bear - Slow Motion (4:36)
6. Belong - Perfect Life (4:29)
7. Sic Alps - The First White Man To Touch California Soil (2:38)
8. Trust - F.T.F (4:08)
9. The Luyas - Face (5:22)
10. Clark - Com Touch (4:23)
11. Rayon Beach - Some Fun Before We Die (3:23)
12. Vivian Girls - Take It As It Comes (3:00)
13. The New Lines - Prodigal Son (2:57)
14. Peaking Lights - Dream Beat (6:28)
15. Thee Oh Sees - Contraption/Soul Desert (5:21)
16. Bill Callahan - Riding For The Feeling (6:05)

http://www44.zippyshare.com/v/11416965/file.html

I don't think Bill Callahan would approve of me ending with Riding for the Feeling but ehhh I just wanted to (what can you follow that track with? nothing). LP tentatively scheduled for this SATURDAY NIGHT, DEC. 8TH @ 6PM EST!!

Post-Rock mix by Rich

Hmm...

I started off trying to make a list of THE 'post-rock' bits you need to hear, but the more I thought and fiddled about, the more I came to realise that I really didn't want to and couldn't come up with a list like that. It's too tricky and at the end of a day, the 'post-rock' genre is frankly stupid. It covers too much and too little at the same time. In a way it's the same with the whole 'punk rock' thing. I mean, I see Gods'pee as 'punk rock', but then so are The Stooges. It's not about the sound. But you know that.

So, this list is more a list of recommendations, and there are a few reasons why I really think they are important and wonderful pieces of music that can be stacked under the 'post-everything' title in a messy and wobbly pile.

 - Rich

01.  Swans - The Sound (live)
02.  Slint - Washer
03.  Hala Strana - Black Dust
04.  Labradford - Mas
05.  Mogwai - Like Herod
06.  Talk Talk - Desire
07.  Jesu - Tired of Me
08.  Flying Saucer Attack - For Silence
09.  Carlton Melton - Found Children

12.  Tortoise - Gamera

You can get this mix here or you can listen to a partial mix on spotify and you can read Rich's extended explanation regarding track choice/general listening footnotes in the comments below.

2011 Communal Ohh! Vankyvank Cumcum! Mix

As the days of our ability to share music dwindle down to only a handful (maybe this is what the Mayans were warning us about?) I feel even more guilty for taking so long to put together this 2011 Communal Mix. How long do we have? Minutes? Weeks? Hours? Let's make every circlejerky moment count, people! <(^) We had a big turnout for the communal mix this year, so I split it into two parts (though they should flow pretty well if you want to do one after the other). Below, the track number, the artist, the track title, then the length and the boardie who picked it. I didn't look too closely at release dates, so if someone picked something that really came out in 2010 mock them furiously.

Hope you enjoy!

Harris Tapeworm 2011!

The person I made my tapetrade for shares with me a loves for music made by differents, them what speak and act different, so I did some of that. Actually, this mix is a pretty good representation of stuff that I *LOVED* this year, that I either knew about before (like Ellington and Stevens) and fell back in love with, or was only just exposed to it and couldn't get it out of my mind. So yeah. Enjoy, my tapetrade... person :D

RHMB Communal Lyrics Mix!

"Music is meaningful."

Lyrics are serious business. Because of this, I usually don't pay much attention to them. "Argh! Your mouth sounds are getting in the way of the synthesizers and static", I say. But ok, I can stop being a hater for a minute and listen to some music with clever, earnest, even narrative lyrics, about people and ideas and... stuff. Since I don't have much experience in this sort of thing I begged the good people at the RHMB to help me out, and this is the collection they came up with. Thanks, folks! Boardie who picked the song is in parentheses beside their track below. If you want to find out what the lyrics mean, or whatever, ask them (or check the always reliable songmeanings.net):
1. Hello Saferide - Lund (pocki)
2. Elvis Costello - Big Boys (demo) (pocketbook angel)
3. Zita Swoon - About the Successful Emotional Recovery of a Gal Named Maria (stu)
4. Gil Scott-Heron - The Revolution Will Not Be Televised (TiltedEarth)
5. Scott Walker - Farmer In The City (Wesley Crusher)
6. Brian Eno - China My China (~Harri)
7. Sharon Van Etten - One Day (Miss Modular)
8. Bonnie 'Prince' Billy - Lay And Love (Brian of Nazareth)
9. The Dears - 22: The Death Of All The Romance (heyimafishy)
10. Emmy The Great - MIA (The Grolsch)
11. @ir - Playground Love (UnleadedBlue)
12. M0by - The Day (M E C H A N I C A L A S T R O N A U T)
13. Qu33ns Of The St0ne @ge - Go With The Flow (Romi)
14. Arab Strap - Packs Of Three (lonely minotaur)
15. Why? - The Fall of Mr Fifths (Absentia)
16. R@ndy Newm@n - My Life Is Good (Sarah Juice)
17. Grandaddy - Saddest Vacant Lot in All the World (_)
18. Loreena McKennitt - Prospero's Speech (seasons)
19. Killah Priest - Heavy Mental (revilo)
20. S@r@h McL@chl@n - Possession (radiokidb)
21. Mount Eerie - I Whale (fradleybox)
22. Leonard Cohen - One of Us Cannot Be Wrong (a)

http://www.mediafire.com/?26eo2pdz3x9t1ug
Sounds good! It's a bit long, 1:25ish, so I'm not really sure what a good time for a listening party will be. Let me know when you want it, please.

lawyer up,

Harri's First Half of 2011 Mix!

the hat

I've been a little busy the last few months and haven't had the time to incorrectly tag mp3 files, upload them to hit-or-miss virus-ridden file-sharing sites, and then write up confusing meme-filled ramblings about everything except the music you're being told to listen to. What's a music?

But anyway, if you have NEVER downloaded a FIRST HALF OF XXXX mix, then now is the time to do so as this is a fine bunch of songs. Listen. Emotions will scald you like a blistering hot shower of raw sentiment and overwhelming feelings. What's left of you will be quivering in a puddle of tears, hemorrhaging confusion and overtaken with the regret that your life up to this moment has been meaningless. I promise, bro.

Tracklist:
1. The Luyas - Too Beautiful To Work (3:41)
2. Wax Idols - All Too Human (3:01)
3. Leno Lovecraft - Cybernetic (4:00)
4. Sic Alps - Do You Want To Give $$? (2:44)
5. Sands Hollow - Watch Yourself (2:25)
6. Warpaint - Undertow (Javelin Remix) (3:05)
7. Young Prisms - Eleni (3:45)
8. John Maus - Quantum Leap (2:48)
9. The New Lines - Please Fall In Love (3:21)
10. Belong - Never Came Close (4:13)
11. Golf Swingers - It Fight (2:15)
12. Rayon Beach - Death Rides a Horse (2:19)
13. Moon Duo - Fallout (5:30)
14. Vivian Girls - Death (2:46)
15. Peaking Lights - Summertime (5:13)
16. The Fresh & Onlys - Wash Over Us (3:39)

http://www.mediafire.com/?mzpshy6t0j1xakj
Before you get all uppity like "it's only MAY JEEEEZUUUSSS WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOU STUPID" it's been almost exactly six months since I posted my best of 2010 mix so stop being mean to me. Listening party NEXT Saturday 14th at 7PM EST! Soundcloud stream this time, I swear (and maybe an LP this weekend if people are interested.)

~Harri

P.S.(A.): Since this blog has been hawking The New Lines til readers' ears have bled, I think that a little spam is in order: go here and buy their first 7" single (one song of which is on this mix).

Harri v. Grolsch: [Mostly] 2011 So Far Mix!

As you can tell from both the title and the picture, there is a little combativeness going on in this mix. Most of you are aware of the bitter, bitter relationship between Grolsch and I. He's wrong about things (like thinking "documentaries" aren't really "movies") and I hold silent grudges against him for this (that last for years). See? Bitter. But hey, he was like "why don't we make a mix together?" and I saw this for the opportunity to exploit that it is! So the first eight tracks are from me, some of my harsher more Mudd E. Production favorites of this year, and then 9-18 are pure Grolsch picks, full of things like "melody" and "understandable lyrics" that the editorial staff of this blog has historically shunned. What I'm trying to say is that Grolsch is good people. ♥ Now for the music:
